Abstract

This article aims to describe the implementation process of a specific analysis methodology, the Causal Layered Analysis, as a participatory tool to approach the problem of solid urban waste in Montevideo, Uruguay. This methodology applies a vertical analysis of four causal layers aimed at enriching the understanding of the nature of a problem (contemplating its manifestations and systemic causes, as well as the perspectives of the world from which it emerges or is sustained by), and a horizontal analysis of each layer to explore possible courses of action (and involved parties) in order to solve the problem in the short, medium, and long term. At approaching the solid waste problem in Montevideo, the analysis involved a series of participatory events in which diverse parties, both academic and non-academic, were involved. These events were held within a context of articulation between extension, teaching and research units of the Universidad de la República (UdelaR, due to its initials in Spanish). The analysis allows us to reflect on the potential of this methodology as a tool for deliberation and learning in spaces of collective participation and transformation.
