Abstract

rthodontic therapy allows the functional and esthetic improvement of malpositioned dental pieces; however, it gives rise to the formation of niches for the development of microorganisms due to the difficulty of hygiene and food retention, consequently, antimicrobial materials based on nanotechnology have been developed. Therefore, the objective of this chapter is to compile updated information on nanoparticles applied in the orthodontic field. The methodology had a non-experimental design with a quantitative, documentary, and cross-sectional approach. The results show that in the orthodontic field, nanoparticles are used as a coating or in combination with materials in the area, being silver the main nanoparticulate in use with antimicrobial effects and without adverse action on the physical and chemical properties of the same. Although the advantages of nanoparticles are great, it is necessary to expand clinical studies to establish full criteria for their therapeutic use
