Abstract

SELF-ESTEEM AS INDICATOR OF QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE ELDERLY ADULT: RESULTS OF AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM IN ECUADORABSTRACTQuality of life in the elderly population is a component that can influence self-perception and self-image, even more so when there are environmental indicators that can worsen quality of life and well-being during aging. Thus, from the university extension, community outreach projects are developed focused on this vulnerable group. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the intervention of the University Extension project through the analysis of the levels of self-esteem as an indicator of the quality of life of the participants. The sample is characterized by 88 women (59%) and 62 men (41%) over 65 years of age (M = 76; DT = 7.5), the data were collected at the beginning and end of the project from the participants who remained Frequently attending work sessions in the framework of two main axes: cognition and emotion under the guidelines of positive psychology. For the measurement of self-esteem, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (α = 0.7) was used. The sum of the responses generates two interval cuts that results in high, medium and low self-esteem levels. In the analysis of comparison of means, with the student's t test for related samples, it is observed that there is a statistically significant difference (t (149) = - 13,959; p = 0.000) between the self-esteem levels of the older adults who participated in the whole process of the bonding project; obtaining better levels of self-esteem at the end of the project.KEYWORDS: Quality of life; self-esteem; university extension; older adult.
