Abstract

The Organizing Committee of the 56th International Congress of Americanists (ICA) publishes the proceedings of the meeting held at the University of Salamanca on July 15-20, 2018. Under the theme “Universality and Particularism in the Americas,” it reflected on the dialectic between universality and particularisms in the production of knowledge, a dialogue in which the need to know the particularisms of social, political, artistic and cultural phenomena forces the formulation of new hypotheses that enrich and rethink the great general theories of the sciences and humanities. The interdisciplinary and inclusive character that has characterized the ICA since its inception in 1875, as a congress of area studies in the full sense, makes this dynamic of knowledge production even more significant. With an interdisciplinary and inclusive approach, ICA brings together researchers who study the American continent, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, including the Caribbean territory, based on the analysis of its politics, economy, culture, languages, history and prehistory. Thus, the Organizing Committee invited them to participate in the analysis and reflection on the specificities of the Americas and the Caribbean with the aim of enriching the great general theories.
