Gonzaga, de Prai para Filho is an example of how Breno Silveira is shaping the current bra-zilian cinema in order to promote a certain aesthetic of popular memory. From the Aesthetics of Hunger, the manifiesto signed by Gauber Rocha which summarized the artistic scope of Cinema Novo, to the current image of hunger, Silveira confronts the myth of Brazil ́s identity through the figures of Luiz Gonzaga and his son Gonzaguinha using popular music and culture as sources to validate his image of hunger. This image nourishes the topics of hunger, poverty and self-made man and builts the idea of prosthetic memory. The prosthetic memory acts as an audiovisual fetish to reelaborate the past through a mise-en-scène which assimilates the aesthethic of hunger and corrects its criticism creating a certain idea of brazilian cinema.
