This study is aimed at finding out some key variables might help to manage properly human resources in hospitals. We analyze how personality variables influence the chronic workstress among professional hospital nurses and provide empirical evidence on the sequential order in which theirs symptoms (emotional exhaustion, despersonalization and low personal accomplishment) appear and develop. We selected a random sample of 265 professional nurses, working closed with patients, in Cruces Hospital (Baracaldo-Vizcaya). We used a hypothesized causal model to which we applied the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) adapted tothe Spanish data and the Battery of Control Generalidez Expectations Scales (BEEGC-20).Our results showed that personality constructs (luck, defenselessness, perceived personalcontrol contingency, selfefficacy and sucess) are significantly associated with the degree ofchronic work stress. We also found that both feelings of low personal accomplishment and emotional exhaustion can arise simultaneously as a response to the perceived work stress.
