Abstract
Geographical transition, an intrinsecal feature of the Western regions of Castilla-León, is shown both in physical aspects (relief, climate, vegetation...) and in demographic behaviour. The examples of Cepeda Alta (León) y Alto Aliste (Zamora), which are studied here, are useful in order to detect this transition and to emphasize the simillititudes between these two subregions. The migration in the 50s and 60s, ageing, and consequently, the decrease in population, favoured the breaking up of traditional socio-economical structures, even more than in high mountain regions. Nowadays, unemployment in towns allows these regions to face future somehow hopefully, not so much as to population increase but as far as circumstantial stagnation of that population is concerned. This is, therefore, the best moment to these mountain regions with new financial support coming from institutional authorities.
