Abstract

The article reviews some lines of thought on which skills are involved in learning to read an alphabetic system. First, the evolution of writing systems are summarized and the particular characteristics of the alphabetic system compared with the syllabic and logographic systems are detailed. Finally, studies on the role of word analysis and more specifically phonetic analysis in learning to read are reviewed together with when and how this skill is acquired.
