Abstract

According to the double nature -mathematical and textual- of arithmetic word problem solving, an empirical study has been developed in which two different aids were added to the problem-solving process: 1) (mathematical or situational) rewording, and 2) inclusion of drawings related to the mathematical and situational structure of the problem. Using non-parametric statistics, the effectiveness of these aids on the success rate of a sample of 152 3rd to 5th graders in solving twelve two-step problems was analysed. Our results showed that both textual aids and mathematical drawings lead children (especially high ability children) to better achievement, while situational drawings had no effect.
