Abstract

Fernán Caballero, known as a costumbrista writer and as a pioneer of the novel and folk tale in its passing from Romanticism to Realism, has also played a very important role in recovering Spanish popular folk tales, in mid nineteenth century. She is said to be the first compiler of this kind of folk tales, directly recovered from oral tradition. Following the model of the Brothers Grimm in Germany, Fernáncollects a hundred folk tales from the Andalusian peasants of her area, being faithful to the original version and without modifying or burdening the content with innecessary morals. This way of proceeding contrasts with the moralizing drive of the autor in the remainder of her narrative work, and also, with later writers who, like Trueba o Coloma, re-wrote traditional tales, distorting its original form.
