Abstract

This paper studies how Rokeya S. Hossain’s “Sultana’s Dream” proposes gender equality as main instrument to challenge the chauvinist domination imposed on the Muslim women of the beginning of the twentieth century in the South Asian Subcontinent. The article firstly studies how Hossain presents a new model of woman to dismantle the derogatory systems that were imposed on women based on social, political, educative and economic exclusion. Furthermore, the essay highlights how Hossain empowered education in real life to promote social and gender equality. To sum up, the limited presence of Hossain’s writing in academic syllabus as well as for general readers will be highlighted as an example of all those female writers who are still unknown and unreferenced.
