Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of support needs of people with intellectual disabilities living institutionalized in a particular context such as Chile. The research adopts a mixed methodological design, of quantitative and qualitative nature. Quantitative analyses present the results obtained after utilizing the Supports Intensity Scale, SIS. Qualitative analysis presents the results obtained after gathering three focus groups with service providers. The analyses revealed some discrepancies between quantitative and qualitative findings. From a quantitative point of view, the profile of support needs corresponds to level I, the lowest level, and is quite homogeneous. However, qualitative analyses suggest the existence of higher support needs related to home life, community life, and human development. In addition service providers indicate a need to provide this support in a high intensity and long term to achieve personal results. These results support the relevance of using mixed methodologies to describe in greater detail a complex reality.
