Abstract

With this study we want to contribute to the value of self-determination in disability and education field, specifically with regard to students with specific support needs associated with intellectual disabilities. These students are struggling to succeed in their education progress and their transition to adulthood. Self-determination is a key issue to that success. The purpose of this investigation is aimed at assessment and promotion of self-determination. The aim is developed a scale to assess selfdetermined behavior of students, aged 12 to 18 years, with specific support needs associated with intellectual. The Self-determination Scale was applied to 101 high school students with intellectual disabilities or learning disabilities between 12 and 18 years old. We have done a preliminary analysis of the psychometric properties of this scale to confirm the validity of the changes based on theory that were previously incorporated and to develop a reliable and efficient scale that provide useful information about students self-determination, and also useful to implement programs in high school. This analysis consists of reliability measures and validity indices, as well as analyses of item functioning. The obtained outcomes support the continuity of investigation, and the incorporation of small changes to improve the scale.
