Doctor by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid with the thesis La integración personal, social y vocacional de los deficientes psíquicos adelescentes 1987. Supervised by Dr. José Antonio Carrobles Isabel.

At the University of Salamanca, he is Professor of Disability Psychology, founder and director of the University Institute for Community Integration (1996-2023) and of the Disability Information Service of the Regional Government of Castile and León and the University of Salamanca (since 1999). He has directed or coordinated 85 competitive research projects and 111 R&D&I contracts, agreements, or projects with public or private administrations or entities at the University of Salamanca. He has directed the Consolidated Research Unit UIC 115 (Disability) of the Regional Government of Castile and León since 2015. He has published as author/co-author 289 scientific articles (138 of them with a JCR impact factor in Web of Science: 64 Q1; 40 Q2; 22 Q3; 12 Q4), 461 book chapters and other publications, 88 books, and 25 assessment scales, and has presented 462 lectures and 1,079 communications or posters at conferences. He has supervised 47 doctoral theses, 24 (51%) of which received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award, and 34 of these doctoral students are professors at Spanish and international universities. He has seven six-year research periods. Since 1993, he has been the editor of Siglo Cero, the prestigious and oldest Spanish scientific journal on intelectual disability, published by the Plena Inclusión España-University of Salamanca Confederation. He appears in the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 editions of Stanford University's “Ranking of the World Scientists: World's Top 2% Scientists” list of the most influential researchers in their field worldwide. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research work at the national and international levels, including: Honorary Doctorate from ISALUD University, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2012; the 2014 Education Medal and Honorary Doctorate from Anáhuac University, Mexico, 2023; the 2018 UAM Alumni Award from the Autonomous University of Madrid; the Family and Disability Award from the Telefónica-Repsol Foundation-Down Madrid Chair (Comillas Pontifical University) 2016; the 2013 Queen Sofía Award for Rehabilitation and Integration from the Royal Board on Disability; and the 2010 Infanta Cristina Research Award, and others.
