Zusammenfassung

Torquemada is a very interesting character due to the transformation he undergoes. Throughout the tetralogy (Torquemada en la Hoguera, 1889, Torquemada en la Cruz, 1893, Torquemada en el Purgatorio, 1894, Torquemada y San Pedro, 1895) shows a very strong attachment to the tangible, but aspires to transcend this limit in different ways. These works by Benito Pérez Galdós show a man who tries to find a spiritual life from a materialistic approach. In this way, he builds a religion of the material (Smith 365). In this work, we stem from the study of the identity of the character made by Urey to deepen his struggle and the conflict between Freudian anal eroticism and religious sublimation. The opposition between the progress of his personality and his regression in moments of frustration will also be analyzed.
