Abstract
Since the first third of the twentieth century, the Balearic lizard, Podarcis lilfordi, of the Cabrera archipelago has been the object of a continuous study. Especially, its morphological variability and microevolution has been investigated, which has given rise to one of the most notable rassenkreis of this species, with ten subspecies described. In this chapter, we review the published works on the Balearic lizard of Cabrera since 1993, the current status of present day accepted subspecies, their validity and their morphological characteristics, coloration and design. Likewise, we analyzed the concordance or discordance between these subspecies and the established phylogenetic lineages through the genetic study of every known populations. We provide unpublished data on lizard densities in all populations, as well as on their ecological characteristics and natural history traits. The diet of P. lilfordi, the intensity of the consumption of plant elements, the cases of cannibalism and the relationship between the vegetable and animal fractions of the diet are described in detail. We also present unpublished data on the blood parasite load, noting the high prevalence and its possible causes. Finally, we provide information about the predators of the Balearic lizard in Cabrera and about its conservation status.
