Abstract

This work starts from the Modern Era glass necklaces of the Museo del Traje. Centro de Investigación del Patrimonio Etnológico, regularly understood as examples of popular jewellery, to reflect on the value of their beads. It was chosen to focus attention on its economic dimension during the first globalization, when different European monarchies disputed the glass bead production and trade market, destined for domestic consumption and overseas trade. From this premise, it delves into the cases in which the Hispanic Monarchy developed the sector in peninsular territory and explores the possibility that some of the beads with which the museum necklaces were strung were made in its workshops. In any case, the economic importance of the sector and the flows of people and knowledge brought about by its development transfer us from the popular scale to global impact dynamics, which we consider more appropriate to understand the value of wearing these adornments.
