Abstract

In this paper, we explore the current perspectives about intercultural competence in foreign language teaching. For that purpose, we begin from a theoretical review of the discipline and its history in intercultural communication. Subsequently, we analyze the main contributions of the Council of Europe in this field through the most representative works: the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Developing the Intercultural Dimension in Language Teaching, The INCA Project: Intercultural Competence Assessment, Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters and the Framework of Reference for Pluralistic Approaches to Languages and Cultures. Finally, we suggest a proposal in order to integrate interculturalcompetence in SFL, which is structured around the concepts of resources, situations and micro-competence and built through a model that combines these notions with the subcomponents of communicative competence recognized by the Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes.
