Abstract

The concept of amicitia/amistança is everywhere in Alonso de Cartagena's production, i.e. in the translation and gloss as well as in the treaties and diplomatic production. Amidst this corpus, the texts here analysed are those where the influence of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics and the concept of virtuous friendship seems the strongest, even if it means going against the classical definition of amicitia as “virtus quaedam vel cum virtute” that we find in the Translatio Lincolniensis. Are also underlined the political use of the term amicitia in the Embassy of Alonso de Cartagena to Albert II, King of the Romans, as well as the interest for the translating of Senecan and Aristotelian texts for later use in diplomatic and courteous circles.
