Abstract
Throughout history many theories concerning music —whether musical, philosophical, theological, sociological, or political— share the conviction that music moves or tangibly influences its audience in an ethical or moral way. In modern times Beethoven’s music became the embodiment of this belief. Beginning in Greek antiquity, a small group of philosophers rejected this linkage between music and ethics. The essay, a revised version of a paper delivered in 1997 at the IMS congress in London, is a reminder of this all-but-lost, alternative theoretical approach to music.
