Abstract

We have evaluated whether or not an intensification of reproductive rhythm (number of lambingperiods per year) could improve flock performances. Results from 7260 ewes from 24 Assaf flocks (98-02) have been analysed. Flocks were divided into 4 groups depending on number of mating periods peryear: continuous mating (Group 1), two (group 2), three (group 3) or four (group 4) mating periods.Number of lambing periods/ewe/year was increased (p<0.05) when the number of mating periodsincreased (0.76±0.02; 1.01±0.07; 0.94±0.09; 1.24±0.07, for Groups 1-4 resp). A trend to signification wasfound for liters of milk sold/ewe (176.±14.0; 276.5±84.5; 303.1±22.9 and 350.7±25.9; Groups 1-4 resp, p= 0.07) and lambs sold per ewe (0.70±0.06; 0.97±0.17; 1.07±0.09 and 1.32±0.15; Gropus 1-4 resp,p=0.09). In conclusion, an increment of the number of mating periods in a flock is able to increase theoverall performance of the flock throughout the year
