Abstract

We studied the effects on the growth rate at birth weight and at a weeklater in a population of 443 Lechazos from Assaf breeding. The lambs wereartificially fed and weighted 816 times throughout the weeks of growth. Thetargeted average weigh at birth was 4,4 Kg., although this does not affectsignificantly the average gain in weigh. However, this can only be observed inthe first week of birth (P = 0,03) among the different weighs; the biggest growthexists among the lechazos born with a weigh of 4kg, getting to reach 203 gr/day during this week. The first week of life has an important effect on the GMD(Daily Average Gain), with P values of <0001, increasing the growth with time, with values of 179 g / d in the first week until 341 gr / d in the fifth week -although the majority of lechazos are usually weaned in their fourth week of life, with a value of 319 g/d.
