Zusammenfassung

Five field trials have been carried out in order to study the effect of melatonin implants in ewe lambs in four sheep breeds in Spain, in farms of different productive aptitudes: milk, meat or both: Assaf, Churra. Ewe lambs were 8.6-19 months old at implantation. Fertility increased in most of the farm, although no statistical differences were observed. Litter size increased significantly (p < 0.05) in one farm (Assaf), with a trend in another (Assaf). In the Manchega farm fecundity was significantly higher in the treated group. The number of lambs born per ewe lamb was improved in all the farms under study, especially in the Churra farm (100%). The lowest increment was recorded in the Assaf farms (17.8 and 14.3%).
