Abstract

This article analyzes the drawing-induced microstructural damage in pearlite microstructures during cold drawing, with special attention to the analysis of the evolution of translamellar microdefects produced in pearlitic steel wires as a direct result of the cold drawing process (translamellar microdamage). The study was carried out from the observation of the microstructure of wires belonging to the different steps of a real cold drawing chain, formed by seven stages of cold drawing. The evolution of tranlamellar microdefects can be key in the subsequent fracture process of the cold drawn pearlitic steel wires, since the drawing-induced translamellar microdamage events act as weakest links or fracture precursors/initiators, thereby affecting the microstructural integrity of the wires.
