Abstract

This article analyzes the microstructural damage in pearlite microstructures during cold drawing, with special attention to the analysis of the evolution of intercolonial microdefects produced in pearlitic steel wires as a direct result of the cold drawing process (intercolonial microdamage). The study was carried out from the observation of the microstructure of wires belonging to the different steps of a real cold drawing chain, formed by seven stages of cold drawing. The evolution of intercolonial microdefects can be key in the subsequent fracture process of the cold drawn pearlitic steel wires, since the drawing-induced intercolonial microdamage events act as weakest links or fracture precursors/initiators, thereby affecting the microstructural integrity of the wires.
