Resumen

El artículo se centra en analizar la discriminación y desigualdad que han sufrido las mujeres en situación de viudedad en la India partiendo de diferentes fuentes geográficas. Se sigue un recorrido temporal que abarca, de forma cronológica, distintas épocas históricas. Se parte de una aproximación al concepto de sati. A través de referencias clásicas y de los relatos de viajeros medievales, se explora la formación y la transmisión de la idea de la autoinmolación de las esposas viudas en el imaginario colectivo europeo que, posteriormente, se traslada a la creación de una imagen simbólica. Después se estudia la iconografía alusiva a esta práctica incluida en las miniaturas que iluminan los mapas históricos. También se revisan los grabados presentes en compendios geográficos.
