Abstract

Colour plays a fundamental role in heritage documentation and conservation tasks. Frequently, the methodology used for the registration of colour is limited to subjective processes, dependenton the experience of the observer, thus limiting the results. Although the use of digital images is a great improvement, the treatment of colour must be rigorously approached from acolourimetric point of view. This paper aims at defining a rigorous procedure to accurately capture colour in device independent colour spaces through the colourimetric characterisation of digitalsensors, following the recommendations of the Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE). A specific software called pyColourimetry has been developed. The methodology has been successfully applied to scenes acquired in shelters of Levantine rock art. The results indicate that the characterization process is rigorous in the measurement of colour, non-invasive and low cost, being of great applicability in rock art documentation.
