Doctor by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid with the thesis Mechanical behavior of hybrid 3D woven composites 2014. Supervised by Dr. Javier Llorca Martínez, Dr. Carlos González Martínez.
Raúl Muñoz is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carlos III University of Madrid, where his doctoral thesis, "Mechanical Behavior of Hybrid 3D Woven Composites," received the Best Doctoral Thesis Award from the Spanish Association of Composite Materials (AEMAC). Prior to his current role, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Aeronautics Department at Imperial College London, analyzing the damage tolerance of carbon fiber panels subjected to compression loads after impact. Previously, at the IMDEA Materials Institute, he collaborated with AIRBUS for nearly five years on various R&D projects related to ice and lightning strike effects on aircraft structures. Beyond academia, he has contributed to major industrial projects, including the structural analysis of tritium generators for the ITER nuclear fusion experiment and leading the design of shielding for a nuclear reactor installed on a submarine. Currently, his research interests are focused on finite element simulation of nonlinear thermo-mechanical problems, as well as the study of composite materials—such as carbon fiber-reinforced polymers and glass fiber composites—particularly their behavior under impact loads.
