Doctor by the Universidad de Valladolid with the thesis Miguel de Irizar y Domenzain (1635-1684 ?) biografía, epistolario y estudio de sus lamentaciones 1992. Supervised by Dr. María Antonia Virgili Blanquet.

Matilde Olarte is currently Musicology Professor at the Arts Faculty at the University of Salamanca. B-Mus degree in Piano by the Professional Conservatory of Music in Valladolid (1983), obtained his B-Mus degree in Musicology at the University of Oviedo (1987), her M-Mus degree of Magistrum in Music at the University of Glasgow (1990), her Ph-D in Music at University of Valladolid (1992), and Master's Degree in Specialist Studies on the Oral Tradition at Valladolid University (1996). Her main fields of teaching and researching covers Spanish Oral Traditional Music, Gender Studies in Spanish Music, and with special emphasis, on Film Music. Since 1989 she teaches at the University of Salamanca, although she combines it with guest lecturers in Spanish and foreign universities, highlighting their PhD courses and conferences in Heidelberg, Köln, Detmold, Berlin and Bonn (Germany), Glasgow , Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain), Bergamo and Padua (Italy), Paris, Viena, Sofia and Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Montevideo (Uruguay), Mexico DF, Querétaro, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí (Mexico) or New Mexico, Virginia and New York (USA). She is the Coordinator of the Research Group IHMAGINE (https://ihmagine.usal.es/). Her research focuses primarily on projects sponsored by the Spanish I+D Ministry for Research and the Local Government Junta de Castilla y Leon, and other Spanish and European programs such as INAEM, AECI, DAAD, and Erasmus. She has been Treasurer of the Spanish Musicology Society (2003-2007). She has been the Coordinator and Director of the Biennal Conference on Film Music at Salamanca University since beginning in 2002 to 2010 (which proceedings have been published). She has been the coordinator of the Master-in-Music studies [Máster en Música Hispana] in Salamanca University and actually she is the coordinator of the Practicum for Undergraduate and Potsgraduate Musicology Studies. Some of her books are Miguel de Irizar y Domenzain. Biography, Correspondence and Study of his Lamentations (Valladolid, 1996), the two volumes of Child's Playsongs (Madrid, 1997 and 2001), Between Rounds and Games (Montevideo, 1998), The Musical Legacy of Twentieth Century (Pamplona, 2002), Music in the Mass-media. She coordinates the musicological collections "Musicologia Hoy" (Amaru Editions) and "Musica Viva" (Salamanca University Press).
