Abstract

Supports are the principal tool to decrease the differences between people with disabilities’ skills and environmental demands. In this way, an individual assessment on the supports that each student needs is required. Supports should be focusing on academic activities and on participation in different activities of daily life. Then, effective supports can be implemented. The Support Intensity ScaleSIS (Thompson et al., 2004) is the first standardized tool that provides objective dates on support needs of people with intellectual. However, SIS only can be applied to adults, and there is not any validated instrument to assess support needs on children with disabilities. Currently, Support Intensity Scale-SIS for Children (5-16 years) is been developed by American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) and in Spain (Castilian Spanish) by the University Institute on Community Integration (INICO). A pilot study with more than 100 children with intellectual disability between 5 and 16 years old has been developed. The analysis of results has allowed drawing preliminary conclusions about the Children’s SIS. If we know psychometric characteristics of this instrument and how to function in different conditions so we can also know the hard points and optimizer the assessments.
